SNAPSHOT

Aren't you so proud of me, I have been doing a better job a keeping this updated weekly! So let me tell about nursing school this past week. Tuesday is the day we have class all day long. Our theory class was on primary care of the infant and toddler. Then after class we got our ethical essays back that were due two weeks ago. I did pretty well on mine so I was happy about that. For seminar we have a really lame project due called Webquest and my group has the topic eating disorders. We have to create a teaching tool and presentation along with a bunch of other stuff. This past tuesday we had to do three annotated bibliographies (fancy term for summary) on research articles for our topic. So I worked on that before class started. Wednesday I had off but I ended up doing something but I can't remember. Then Thursday and Friday were back in clinical in the OB. I still haven't gotten to see a delivery yet which is a huge bummer. But I did get to work with some really awesome moms and babies. Friday I actually got to do a lot of stuff and was really busy (which is all good because I am learning lots, but wasn't able to get any paperwork done so now I have to do that this weekend). But yeah that was a quick snapshot of my week. We are so close to being done. We have one week left of regular classes, and I only have more days left in the hospital for this rotation. Then the following week we have our final exam. Then we are done...only for about 2 weeks though. :(

Bring on the BABIES!

As you all know unless you don't read my blog frequently, I am in my OB rotation...and it has been a huge joy. I get to see little tiny bodies working to provide life...only God could have created something as complex and beautiful as this! This week on Thursday and Friday we have been on the unit in the afternoons. So far I have only gotten to work with postpartum moms and their babies (postpartum means a mom that has recently given birth). It has been an amazing experience. I'm sorta bummed that I haven't gotten to see a delivery yet or a c-section. I'm not going to lie, it is sort of awkward and hard for me to be one the unit for eight hours and not see another male (unless its the doctor). Its just a different setting but I still think it is fun. Probably sure the moms are surprised when they see me walk in the door and find out that I'm their student nurse for the day! However, they have been great. Yesterday was awesome. The baby was so cute and I got to hold him and everything. The baby didn't like it when I had to take his clothes off to weigh him and then the only way I could keep him quiet to count his respiration and heart rate was to hold him. And I got to give my first shot to the mom! I did so much better than I thought I was going to do.

Tuesday we had our 4th exam which was a disaster. I think that everyone did bad. the professors all ended up going over the test with each other because the scores where so bad and they ended up throwing out like 10 questions so that made things a lot better. Then we talked about mental health and grieving in pregnancy. We had to watch a video in class that was so sad. I had actually watched it earlier not in class and cried. I provided a link to it. It is a sad video but its a reality that people have to deal with. Just a warning I you have any kinda feelings for other people this will probably make you cry. All you need to do to watch the video is click on the title of this blog at the top "Bring on the Babies".

Moms and babies!

Yesterday was my first day of clinical in the OB (labor and delivery, postpartum, infant nursery, like kind of stuff). Its a little bit of an awkward place for a male nurse to be but I really enjoyed the time we got to spend on the floor. Since yesterday was the first day we had to go through a lot of orientation type stuff like documentation, getting badges, a tour, ect. Then we got to spend about an hour and a half on the floor with a postpartum mom and her baby. We got to do a head to toe assessment on both of them. The baby was so precious! The diapers were smaller than the size of my palm. What a precious gift of life God has created. We have a test on Tuesday over the past three weeks of theory class and I have an inkling that this one is going to be tough.

OB clinicals starting soon!

So sorry I haven't been very good updating this weekly. Hopefully things will tone down a little bit and I won't be so busy. Seriously this past week I have either been doing homework (writing papers), working, or sleeping. And sleeping has not been very much. Don't feel jipped because I haven't written anything lately...I had a few days were I accidently missed a meal because of this huge workload. I had to do all my primary care rotation paperwork and LEI folder. It was all due on Tuesday so now I feel so much better because I have it all turned in. Last Tuesday we had our third test which was really tricky but I did really well on it! It covered care of the middle to older adult and ethical/moral issues. Then after the test we had a class on care of the adolescent. This past Tuesday we had are class on pregnancy complications. Tomorrow I have OB simulations and then the following week I will be starting my OB rotation at Metro hospital. I'm really looking forward to this upcoming experience. Other side news I got my new vehicle today!...2005 chevy equinox! Now on to finishing this ethical essay. Yup, on top of all our other work we have to write an essay on the Tuskegee Syphilis study. :(....
